Position Title: Golf Course Superintendent
Reports To: Director of Park Administration
Supervises: 1 – 30
Requirements: City of Buffalo residency, NYS Driver’s License
Position Summary:
The Golf Course Superintendent position is responsible for managing the maintenance program of the three municipally owned and BOPC operated golf courses as to their care, quality and sustainability. Working with the Director of Park Administration shall develop an annual plan of work for each of the BOPC Golf Courses including staffing requirements, equipment forecasts, and budgeting, along with performance metrics. Manages the golf course foremen and seasonal staff assigned to the golf courses for golf greens, fairways, and other surfaces as required, with compliance of all golfing regulations and requirements. Sets standards to maintain optimal golf course conditions to ensure all 3 golf courses are consistently held at a high level of playability.
This position is non-exempt according to the Fair Labor Standards Act and the NYS Department of Labor rules and regulations. The workweek includes flexible schedules depending on the workload, with some weekend and holiday work.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
- Serves in a leadership position which trains and oversees golf course foremen, seasonal staff and city assigned staff, to obtain consistent results.
- Works with the Director of Park Administration in the development of golf course budgets (Staff hours and payroll, chemicals orders and other course improvements that may be needed, or forecasted), and responsibly adheres to budgets.
- Ensures proper care and trains staff in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies and promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices.
- Oversees all assigned personnel, work allocations, training, and team problem resolution; evaluates staff performance and makes recommendations for personnel actions; motivating employees to achieve peak productivity and performance.
- Sets and manages golf course workplans and daily duties to include cutting cups, setting tees, repairing greens, raking bunkers, and mowing greens and fairways, etc.
- Manages maintenance and repairs to irrigation systems, in consultation with the facilities/infrastructure specialist and City of Buffalo.
- As needed, assists in managing the maintenance and restoration of the athletic fields as needed and in coordination and communication with District Supervisors.
- Attends BOPC operational staff meetings, OSHA and other training requirements.
- Performs other job-related duties as assigned by management
Qualifications and Attributes:
- At least 10 years of experience equivalent to job responsibilities, including golf course experience.
- Must have pesticide Applicator License, with knowledge of pests, fertilizer and/or pesticide applications, and knowledge of turf and pest management guidelines and standards.
- OR Must be able to obtain State of New York Pesticide License in Ornamental and Turf Pest Control within 3 months of hire date.
- CDL license is preferred.
- Knowledge of USGA regulations and standards regarding course settings. Plus knowledge of golf course maintenance activities to include placement of tees and pins, irrigation techniques, and turf care.
- Experience in marking sports fields, golf equipment repairs, standards for athletic fields, and reel sharpening is a plus.
- Ability to supervise and train employees, including organizing, prioritizing and scheduling work assignments, with an ability to understand, follow, and enforce safety procedures.
- Resourcefulness in utilizing staff and/or equipment, and ability to follow an approved annual budget to the greatest benefit of the company.
- Possesses a leader and team player mentality for fostering a cooperative work environment and a work ethic in leading by example, reliability, and dedication.
Working Conditions:
- Both office and field work; paperwork, meetings, and administrative functions. Balancing time between functions will be essential.
- Hands on field work may be performed in extreme weather conditions.
- These job duties require an employee to bend, reach, stoop, stand and/or walk for extended periods, as well as lift and/or move heavy objects at times up to 50 lbs.
- These job duties may require an employee to drive distances between park features or locations, and to potentially operate standard to heavy machinery.
- Must be able to adapt to ever changing resources and limited budget.
- This position may be required to respond to emergency, on-call situations at any time.
