FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Pre-adopt your GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS FLOmingo starting today!

Buffalo, N.Y. – Happy FLOmingo Day, Buffalo! June 21st has become an unofficial holiday for the Buffalo Olmsted Parks Conservancy since they first broke the GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS title for the “Longest line of garden flamingos” on June 21st, 2018, in Bidwell Parkway. Since then, the flamingo, re-named FLOmingo in honor of Frederick Law Olmsted, has also become the unofficial mascot of the Conservancy.

In October 2019, the GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS was taken back by Pledge the Pink of Callawassie Island, South Carolina with over 3,300 flamingos in a line. In 2022, as the Conservancy joins the national celebration of Olmsted’s 200th birthday, on June 21st, the Conservancy will be attempting to regain title. It’s game time Buffalo!

“2022 will prove to be a year of celebration, as our community and country honors the 200th birthday of Frederick Law Olmsted,” said Stephanie Crockatt, Conservancy Executive Director. “And while paying homage to a great visionary man, we intend to have some fun in our parks as well and bring attention to the importance of Buffalo’s Olmsted collection being the nation’s first urban park system. With the awesome competitive nature of Buffalonians, we hope everyone will help us attempt to reclaim Buffalo’s world record and pre-adopt FLOmingos now, in preparation for the grand event in 2022.”

Starting today, you can officially pre-adopt your FLOmingos and secure your place in Buffalo history. Proceeds from FLOmingo adoptions will help support the attempt as well as the Conservancy’s mission and celebration of Olmsted’s 200th birthday. FLOmingo adoptions can be found at this website; www.bfloparks.org/flomingo22.

Olmsted’s intent and vision of public parks was for all people, knowing their ability to strengthen communities and promote public health and well-being – something that remains important today more than ever. Through events, education and advocacy at the local and national levels, the Olmsted 200 celebration, being championed by the National Association for Olmsted Parks, ensures that Olmsted’s legacy will live on by renewing public and policy commitments to the preservation and care of our historic parks and places.
