The official removal of vehicular traffic from Front Park is applauded by all who support Frederick Law Olmsted’s historic design and vision for this iconic gateway landscape.

Years of planning and community engagement between all stakeholders have culminated in the removal of Baird Drive and the return and restoration of historic parkland. This is a huge achievement for Buffalo, the Olmsted Parks Conservancy and New York State. It serves as a positive example of what a renaissance can represent, as the rebirth of a city or region does not necessitate all things new – it can mean a responsible righting of past wrongs.

The conservancy is proud to see another of the many elements of our master preservation plan now coming to fruition. We are pleased to know that Frank Baird will continue to be recognized with a special plaque, and, along with the binational monument, will relocate to a distinguished place near the plaza entrance.

Now is the time to embrace our history and engage our park legacy, especially as the 150th anniversary of Olmsted in Buffalo quickly approaches. Well done, Buffalo! This is what it’s all about; this is the mission of your conservancy – valuing the beauty, accessibility and quality of life your Olmsted Park system provides to all citizens of Western New York.
